IPA
In 1886 a group of French and English teachers founded the International Phonetic Association. The association provides phonetic symbols for the sounds of any language. The whole set of phonetic symbols forms the International Phonetic Alphabet, known as IPA.

Since its creation the phonetic alphabet has undergone a number of revisions. It was last revised in May 2005. The IPA is used in most English-language dictionaries and other reference works and helps you to figure out how to pronounce certain words correctly.
